Last Saturday (28th September) we had a great time providing private chef services for a surprise 30th birthday party.  Usually, our ‘private chef services’ are a fairly intimate affair where we serve a 3 or 5 course meal to around 6 to 8 guests seated in the comfort of their own dining room.  This time, there were 28 guests, and so without the space for everyone to sit around a table, we presented buffet style but maintained the starter/main course/dessert feel.

I love doing these sort of events.  It’s the challenge of using someone else’s kitchen which gets the adrenalin flowing.  I’ve worked in hundreds of different kitchens now so I’m quite used to it but working outside of your personal comfort zone means that you have to think on your feet a lot more.

Gazpacho shooters & salmon canapés

So what food did we serve?  Well, to start with, we provided a stunning display of cold appetisers with a little something for everyone: smoked salmon & dill blinis with lemon crème fraiche, gazpacho shooters, chicken liver parfait toasts, Blacksticks blue cheese and red onion jam crostini, and mozzarella & basil baskets. Alongside this we also served a selection of sushi makki rolls with pickled ginger and wasabi.  In some parts of the world Sushi is better received than in others.  It’s not for everyone I guess, but as I love making it, I was pleased to receive so many favourable comments from the party goers who happily demolished the lot!

For the main course we served a beautiful seared caramelised tuna with Thai flavours, rare roasted local sirloin with pickles and pan juices, and sliced smoked chicken with spiced ratatouille.

To accompany, there was a selection of salads such as Moroccan spiced sweet potato with rocket and parmesan, and Brazilian butterbean; roast potatoes; and chilli baby corn with toasted sesame seeds.

For dessert, and as the birthday girl was French, it seemed appropriate to offer some of our delicious, freshly prepared Macarons, and mini éclairs with chocolate glaze and white chocolate drizzle.  We also served our delicious white chocolate chip brownies, our now famous coffee and walnut cakes, mini Victoria sponges, fruit meringues and Linzer biscuits.

 

All in all, judging by the amount of favourable comments we received I’d say it went down very well.  Afterwards we also cleaned the kitchen area thoroughly and I went home to enjoy a beer. It was also my birthday after all!

    I was the 30th birthday girl on the 28th of September and had the amazing surprise to have you and your wife in my kitchen preparing the buffet. It looked amazing and tasted delicious. As you said we all jumped on the sushis, I absolutely loved them. Loved all the food. After the party I got comments from all my friends saying it was really fabulous and they loved it. So really a massive thank you for the great work and it was a pleasure to meet you, you are both really nice and friendly.
